When a plaintiff brings about a claim or lawsuit, they need a reason to do so. Typically one can't just sue for any reason or for anything without justifying their right to sue with facts. Basically the "action" needs to exist and be valid. So a 'cause of action' is the action(s) the other party made against you or did to you.
